Mid-Michigan's Premier Health Care Organization

Sparrow, mid-Michigan's premier health care organization, has served the community for 114 years. Sparrow's founding dates back to 1896, when the Women's Hospital Association set out to bring critical medical services to Lansing. One doctor and one nurse worked out of a rented house, while the women of the association did everything they could to support operations - including loaning their own household linens when supplies ran low.

In 1910, at a time when the expanding auto industry brought an influx of new families into the area, Edward W. Sparrow - one of Lansing's pioneer developers - donated land on East Michigan Avenue along with a gift of $100,000 to help build a new hospital. The hospital took in its first patients in 1912.

Sparrow has grown to become the region's largest health system, and its diverse range of facilities offer residents some of the most advanced medical technology available in the world. Sparrow has two Lansing campuses, Clinton Memorial Hospital in St. Johns, Sparrow Ionia Hospital in Ionia, and an affiliate hospital, Carson City Hospital. The health system has dozens of satellite care centers and the Sparrow Health Science Pavilion. Sparrow also offers the Michigan Athletic Club, a 276,000-square-foot facility voted one of the country's top health clubs.

Sparrow Hospital, the health system's flagship, serves as the regional center for trauma, cancer care, pediatrics, orthopedics, neonatal intensive care and neurological care. Here, Sparrow patients have access to the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the area. The Sparrow Emergency Department is one of the state's largest and most advanced emergency departments, and the Granger Pediatric Emergency Department is the region's first full-service, 24/7 emergency room designed and equipped specifically for children. Sparrow features neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, operating rooms with robotic-surgery platforms, a certified primary stroke center, the Sparrow Heart and Vascular Center, and the Sparrow Cancer Center. The emergency departments are both located in the 10-story Sparrow Tower, which opened in 2008. The $160 million, 450,000-square-foot Sparrow Tower is the largest single expenditure that has ever been made in mid-Michigan to expand and improve health care services.

Sparrow Hospital has earned the nation's most prestigious honor for nursing achievement and excellence -- recognition as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Considered the "gold standard" for nursing care in hospitals, Magnet status is held by only about 5 percent of hospitals nationwide.

Sparrow Hospital's long list of accreditations includes designations as a Cardiac Center of Excellence by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and a Blue Distinction Center for Cardiac Surgery by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) has honored Sparrow, in partnership with the Michigan State University Department of Surgery, as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence. The Sparrow Cancer Center has earned the American Cancer Society's 10-star rating for community investment.

In 2005, Sparrow Hospital became the first to bring the da Vinci robotic surgical system to mid-Michigan. The da Vinci platform, which features three-dimensional, high-definition visual technology, causes less pain and scarring, and can cut recovery time by as much as half. In 2008, the health system acquired a second robotic surgical system to keep up with patient demand.

New partnerships have allowed Sparrow to continue to expand our scope of service to the communities we serve. These partnerships include:

  • A formal affiliation with Michigan State University's three human health colleges. This formal affiliation will expand research, clinical services and medical education in our region.
  • A partnership with LifeNet of Michigan to establish a 24/7 medical transport service to enhances the region's access to Sparrow's life-saving services.
  • Thoracic and Cardiovascular Institute (TCI) cardiologists and staff joining the Sparrow team, providing more clinical integration in order to deliver coordinated excellence in quality and patient experience.
  • The inclusion of Sparrow Ionia Hospital as a wholly owned subsidiary of Sparrow, which provides a phenomenal opportunity for Sparrow and Ionia to continue to partner in the growth and development of health care in mid-Michigan
